Instagram for 13 and under is not effective as it seems

The social media apps for younger children sound like the media companies care for the younger generation, which is great to know, however, there are holes in the desired solution from bullying and such. It is pretty useless if children who have phones with freedom, constantly fake their age in the age confirmation when creating an account. But, looking at YouTube Kids, seems like it is working, because this product focuses on content that is for kids! Unlike the real media world where people communicate freely, children are curious to explore it and, so, become exposed to the harsh reality of it. Such as cyberbullying, harassment, or predation.

I do not think there is any merit in the apps for children. An example of this would be Facebook building an “Instagram for Kids.” Priya Kumar, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland who researches how social media affects families, had provided an opinion on this media app. “A version of Instagram for children is a way for Facebook to hook in young people and normalize the idea ‘that social connections exist to be monetized.’ ‘From a privacy perspective, you’re just legitimizing children’s interactions being monetized in the same way that all of the adults using these platforms.’” So, there is not even less merit in the app: Instagram for Kids, and therefore, sometimes there is no merit but as it is not a popular platform, there is barely merit in them.

Although I am here criticizing this, it’s true that the apps for 13 and under have no use because I was one of those children who were really curious about social media. From the influence of my friends from middle school, I made an Instagram and Snapchat account. Which I was below the age requirement.

As it is pretty much useless for younger kids to use any social media but it’s for their age range, I think it is still not fine and safe for them to use the regular media apps. Despite it being the only app they would use than the young age range app. According to the article, “it needs to do more to protect its youngest users. Following coverage and public criticism of the abuse, bullying, or predation faced by teens on the app.”

Overall, young children face dangers due to exposure to social media with older-aged people who have negative motives. And, at the same time, the idea of social media apps for their age range is not appealing and effective when age confirmation is a trust issue.

Anyways, I would like to take note of the opinions you may have about social media but for the younger. Do you think it would be effective? Or would it be more effective if there were loads of animal compilations?
