The Origin of Cat Meme: Woman Yelling at a Cat

Woman Yelling at a Cat meme gained its popularity in mid-June 2019.




















All images are from knowyourmeme.com, later stated in the article refers of the images and format creators. 


    You have probably seen this meme with different captions over both images, according to knowyourmeme.com explains this format and creators behind them.

    The image on the left includes a screencap of the actors, Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards, from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reality TV show. Taylor Armstrong crying and pointing and Kyle Richards trying to calm her down. This 14th episode "Malibu Beach Party From Hell" of season two premiered in the United States on December 5th, 2011.

    The image on the right includes a confused cat sitting in front of vegetables. On June 19th, 2018, Tumblr user deadbeforedeath posted this picture with "he no like vegetals." The post gained over 50,300 likes and reblogs in a year. On May 27th, 2019, an instagram account was made due to the cat's popularity called smudge_lord, revealing the cat's name Smudge. 


On May 1st, 2019, before the popularity began, Twitter user MISSINGEGIRL made a post containing both images, along with text, "These photos together is making me lose it." The tweet gained over 78,900 retweets and 276,800 likes in two months.

    The start of the meme's format was on May 2nd, created by Twitter user lc28__, gaining over 20 retweets and 180 likes (left side). On June 2nd, Redditor PerpetualWinter made the first known object-labeling meme based on format (object-labeling refers to the practice of creating captioned images - know your meme), gaining over 310 upvotes in one month (right side).




    Soon after, on June 9th, Redditor 69  posted a template to /r/memes subreddit. This allowed other people to caption the meme anyway they would like. Such as, Redditor Apple-Trump, the user posted the meme based on the format that gained over 38,600 upvotes in twelve days.

    
    Through that and the given template, the meme and its format gained lots of popularity through Reddit in /r/dankmemes and other subreddits.



    This is kind of unrelated, but for the purpose of entertainment and this blog, below, is a drawing of a reenactment of the cat meme! I'm pretty sure I made this in eighth grade for some story assignment that was never marked! 

    For more context, the person is little red riding hood shouting at the wolf with a confused expression.

Instagram for 13 and under is not effective as it seems

  Image from Buzzfeed.com      The social media apps for younger children sound like the media companies care for the younger generation, which is great to know, however, there are holes in the desired solution from bullying and such. It is pretty useless if children who have phones with freedom, constantly fake their age in the age confirmation when creating an account. But, looking at YouTube Kids, seems like it is working, because this product focuses on content that is for kids! Unlike the real media world where people communicate freely, children are curious to explore it and, so, become exposed to the harsh reality of it.
